What are the side effects of the drug 'Singulair'? Can it be taken safely with other allergy meds (like Allegra) and over the counter cold/flu medication?

blondy2061h replied: "I have been on allergra and singulair for a few years with no problems. I personally have no side effects with singulair, and it works great for me. From RxList.com: SIDE EFFECTS: Unusual weakness, stomach upset, diarrhea, dizziness, cough, headache, nausea, vomiting, trouble sleeping, or mouth pain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: hallucinations, fever, persistent sore throat or earache, flu symptoms. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: stomach pain, muscle aches/cramps, irregular heartbeat, yellowing eyes and skin, numbness or tingling of the hands or feet, dull sense of touch, easy bruising or bleeding, swelling, seizures. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, severe swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist."

Is Singulair worth the side effects?/what side effects have you experienced? I have experienced irritability and increased anger, however, a noticeable decrease in my allergy/asthma symptoms...I also feel fuzzy-headed...am trying to figure out if its worth it personally for me to stay on this...would appreciate the experiences of others! :-) I would appreciate if only people who have actually taken or administered/prescribed this drug answer, instead of random answers just to gain points. Thanks!

blwydeven replied: "My 11 year old takes it and has no symptoms. You should talk about this with your doctor, There could be another reason why you are experiencing this."

Garrett B replied: "I have been taking Singuair for years. I am unaware of any noticeable side effects with it ot my other meds. Recently, I ran out of it and Flovent while visiting Mom for Xmas. 1/3/07, I went to a hospital and stayed 5 days with lung problems. The pulmonary physician said my sister's cats probably caused a severe allergic reaction, and without singulair and Flovent, I could have died. It is worth any reasonable soide effects to me, but I do not experience the ones you mention...or any others to my knowledge. I hope this helps you!"

Scott T replied: "Singular and Zyrtec taken in combination is an excellent defense against alergy suffering. I used to get a shot of Kenalog, but my doctor told me it was bad for me over the long run."

If you've taken Singulair or Claritin D (12 hour), what were the side effects? This is my second year teaching at an elementary school, and I've been having pretty bad allergy symptoms since I started. I went to the doctor yesterday, and she prescribed Singulair to be taken at bedtime, and told me to take the 12 hour Claritin D in the mornings. Well, this morning at school, I started having extremely bad hot flashes and sweating really badly. I started feeling really emotional (almost crying), and the muscles in my right arm started burning. My legs felt a little bit weak. I just felt shaky in general. My heart was racing. Since both medications are in my system, I'm not really sure which one could have caused these reactions. My gut tells me it's the Claritin, since the side effects didn't start until this morning around 9, and I took the Singulair last night around 10. Have any of you that have taken those medications had any similar side effects?

jrs replied: "The only problem I have had with Claritin D is it puts me to sleep. It's by far the best allergy medication I have ever taken - the others just don't work for me. Unfortunately, these side effects could be caused by either. I think you'll have to experiment to see which is not working for you."

Michael S replied: "I had hot spells and muscle pain as well as severe headaches and agitation when I took Claritin (D?) almost 12 years ago. My doctor switched me to Allegra-D and those side effects, with the exception of the headaches (though they weren't nearly as bad) went away. Eventually, even the headaches went away. For some people, Claritin works better, for others, Allegra, or some other meds work best. Unfortunately, it's a trial and error situation. Look at the information that you should have gotten with your prescriptions. They should list known side effects, and it's rare for two medications to have the same set."

last night i got really sick...i do have allergies and tried singulair. I got a bad cough, really bad? nasal congestion and i felt like I had a fever. Could've this been a side effect of singulair or just my allergies?

Melanie replied: "That is not a side effect of singulair. It sounds to me like you've got a viral infection. Do you have aches and pains, and do you feel tired or weak? If so, you may have the flu. Cough and fever usually point to the flu, although usually nasal congestion is not an issue, it can sometimes present itself. If your symptoms don't improve or start to go away within a week or so, I would go see your doctor. If you haven't got terrible aches and pains, then it is likely a cold. This makes more sense with the nasal congestion, as a stuffy nose and cough are common with the cold. Sometimes a person can have a low-grade fever with a cold, which may have been what you experienced. You should take your temperature just to be sure. If you have a high fever then it points more towards the flu. In the meantime, the only thing you can really do is keep yourself hydrated and try to rest. If you notice that your sinuses start to hurt really badly, and you have pain in your face, nose, and forehead, then you may have a sinus infection, in which case you should go to the doctor as soon as you can, because you will need an antibiotic. Also, if you start coughing up a lot of mucous or notice that the mucous in your nose is dark yellow or green, this may also be a sign of a bacterial infection. Sounds to me like you've got a virus though, whether it's the flu or a cold. If you're concerned, you should see your doctor, but it sounds like a viral upper respiratory infection which should go away or start to improve within 1 week, although symptoms may drag on for up to two weeks.. but it should start to improve in the first week. Keep washing your hands regularly so you do not spread it to others around you. It is also a good idea to get your flu shot every year and have everybody in your family do so. Hope you feel better soon. Nasal congestion and fever are not generally side effects of singular. You may find on a website that it may list those as a side effect, but these websites generally list a lot of things that are not necessarily side effects of a medication, but rather just things that have been noted in some patients who have taken a medication."

Singulair for allergy/asthma in children...? ...could anyone tell me about their experiences with it? Was it used in combination with anything else? Side effects? Any helpful information would be appreciated.

susan p replied: "My doctor had me on singulair and advair at the same time. The singulair was more to treat my allergies and the advair was for my asthma. They both worked really well together."

grounded for life replied: "dont use it i did but then i read in the newspaper that it is linked to suicide"

Jennifer B replied: "Well, I'm on Singulair for it's allergy effects, but when it's combined with my other medications, I don't feel any side effects or anything. I can't take it solo though. It doesn't work as well. I haven't experienced anything unusual since being prescribed Singulair, so i think it's a good thing..."

acttappalledd replied: "i use singular, and i actually love it. it's really good for my allergies, completely takes them away. i have asthma as well but i really only notice it when i exercise, and it's not very severe so i can't tell you a lot about that, i also am supposed to use a puffer but it increases my anxiety so i stopped."

Kimmy replied: "I had to be prescribe prednisone for awhile for my allergies and asthma. I was also on singulair for over a year and it didn't work at all. I got off of it and was prescribed xyzal for my allergies, which works WONDERS!, and symbicort for my asthma. I use to take Advair and I found that it doesn't work well. Symbicort is a great asthma product and you feels is effects very fast."

Mimi S replied: "It's linked to suicide, but for me it did nothing to help my asthma. I don't have allergies so I can't tell you anything about that part. I had to take it every night before I went to bed, but it really didn't help me. I'm not sure how it is for other people though, I think this whole thing of how it's linked to suicide is just something they did to bring attention to the drug. I took it in order to help me not use my inhaler as often (albuterol) but it made no difference."

marianshultz replied: "my child suffers from allergies and asthma have used it for two years. i give it at night, and only during peak seasons (spring and fall) it seems to work better and the body doesnt get as tolerant to it. has worked fine, but not a cure-all. she has to have another allergy med combined with this one. spring time really wipes her out. good luck"

Allison C replied: "my son has been on singulair in combination with zyrtec and pulmicort....hasn't had an asthma attack in 3 years..no noticeable side affects, except sleepiness"

Anyone have pesonal experience with Singulair? I'm running out of allergy options.? I take meds for migraines sometimes/most likely caused by allergies, been to allergist which was a bust, family doc has given me singular as a last resort (I've tried all the others so please be Singulair specific). I'm primarily worried about the possible side effect of "headache" since I'm prone to them and I haven't found anything specific to that on the web. Thanks!

Jennifer G replied: "I've been taking Singulair for over a month now, and haven't noticed any headaches, or increased headache activity. Hope this helps!"

TrixyLoo replied: "I took Singulair and it gave me severe urges to use the bathroom all day long. I don't know if it will happen to you, but if its worth a shot, try it. Maybe your headaches are from stress or you need glasses. maybe you are caffeine dependent. Acupuncture or a massage might help. My mother in law also has pills that she takes at the onset of a headache. GL"

imcoolyournotgetoverit replied: "I have the same problem and singulair was one of them. my doctor prescribed it to me and it made my allergies twice as bad. it also increased my headaches. but it could work for you i mean everything affects us all differently"

Rickydotcom replied: "Hello, I have both personal as well as professional experience with Singulair® (montelukast). I suffer from allergy symptoms year long. Singulair has helped the most in relieving my symptoms and I haven't experienced any side effects - except when I forget to take it! Unlike traditional antihistamines, Singulair must be taken everyday to work effectively. If you go to the RxList.com link, you'll notice that headache is not listed as a side effect, but I'm sure you know that headache is still a a possibility. However, headaches are a predominant symptom of allergies. I was tested for allergies and was positive for 30 out of 36 allergens. I take Allegra, use 2 sprays as well as Singulair. If I miss I suffer; if I take as prescribed, I feel much better. I hope this helps. Rick the Pharmacist"

Bilbo111 replied: "I think Rick the Pharmacist has the best answer for you. But I would like to add that allergies can be the cause of migraines. I take singulair and clarinex for my allergies and asthma. I also suffer from migraines but as long as I keep my allergies in check I seldom have a migraine. I hope you start feeling better soon."

Missyanne L replied: "Singulair is a good medication. It's often the one that docs try last because it is a bit more expensive and it's not an anti-histamine, it's an anti-leukotryine. It works differently. I have heard very good things about it. good luck! M."

Is Singulair a good medicine for allergies? I was just precribed this drug for allergies and decided I would read about it's information online. I saw alot of side effects including tremors, depression, suicidal thoughts and suicide. To tell you the truth it makes me a bit wary of it.

Chanhassen replied: "Those side effects are very very rare, I'd be incredibly surprised if you experienced any of them. This is pretty mild medicine that can be excellent for treating some people's allergy symptoms. Give it a shot- if your insurance pays for it, otherwise it can be kind of expensive. If it's too much for you, over the counter zyrtec or claritin generics are also very effective, and only cost 5-10$ per month."

Anxiety And Heart Issues With Singulair? im prone to anxiety and ive been having this problem with my heart having several extra beats im on medicine for that..i was giving singulair for my allergies but im scared to take it cause i heard some stories about it some people says its a life savor but then others expierence bad side effects the 2 side effects that worry me is bad anxiety and causing more palpitations or anything else that has to do with the heart..so can i have some advice on the matter and if you take singulair tell me your expierence

PumaPlaya replied: "There are a few notable side effects - but arrhythmias are not among them. Some of the more common ones are allergic reactions, headache and fever."

cooker_upper1 replied: "Over the counter and prescription medication for allegies will dehydrate your body. This will cause sinus infections and, over time, will damage your organs as well. To CURE your allergies, start taking a teaspoon of LOCAL honey each day. This will aid your body in developing immunities to all the air born irritants around you-indoors and out. There are no side effects or long term damages with LOCAL honey. It will, like all herbal remedies, take a while to be really effective but it will also hep you fight off any cold or flu symptoms that you come in contact with. LOCAL honey is 100% natural. Treat your body like its the only one you get."

Singulair: Not a question but a warning? Dr thinks 2 yr old has allergies which caused her sinus infection. He gave her antibiotics for infection and Singulair for allergies. She was up for 4 days straight, ended up with bronchitis, stated her belly hurt, cried all the time. I missed Singulair for 1 night but still have antibiotics. Why did this happen? I looked online and found so much stuff that I thought I would die. I cried more because I was stupid and gave it to her without completely doing research on it. I want to warn all parents to be careful with SINGULAIR! It can be dangerous to children. Read below for common side effects: ore common side effects may include: Abdominal pain, abnormal dreams, allergic reaction, bronchitis, bruising, cough, dental pain, diarrhea, difficulty breathing or swallowing, dizziness, drowsiness, ear infection, ear pain, eczema, eye inflammation, fatigue, fever, flu, hallucinations, headache, hives, indigestion and other digestive problems, infection, insomnia, irritability, itching, More Side Effects: laryngitis, leg pain, muscle aches and cramps, nasal congestion, nausea, pancreatitis, pneumonia, rash, restlessness, runny nose, seizures, sinus pain, skin inflammation, sneezing, sore throat, swelling due to fluid retention, swelling of the mouth or throat, upper respiratory infection, tendency to bleed easily, thirst, viral infection, vomiting And there are many different websites that state the same. Thanks for letting me know that your child takes it and is fine. I understand that each child can react differently and I am glad for those who it didn't bother but just want people to know that the side effects are real.

Sweet Girl replied: "Thanks. But my youngest son takes that and he seem to be doing fine. He takes it at night before going to bed for his asthma and allergies. I haven't seen any problems.."

Mommy to 2 Girls replied: "thanx for the info! that's scary to know but good to know! are these symptoms for both childrens and adult singulair?"

Moi replied: "I would have never given my child Singulair. I don't care if a doctor prescribed it or not. That is a drug primarily used by adults, I would never give it to a 2 year old. Just because a doctor suggests something, doesn't mean it right. As an adult, I've not filled prescriptions because I've felt the doctor misdiagnosed me. Better safe than sorry!"

bailezra replied: "Just FYI, in relation to your daughter's sinus infection (if she is still having problems), a huge number of pediatric sinus infections are actually caused by fungus, not bacteria. In fact, giving an antibiotic to treat a fungal sinus infection can just make the fungal growth worse. So if she is still having trouble, you might want to take her to an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist to have it checked out. Incidentally, any medication has the potential for side effects. The package insert should also tell you the percentage of patients who experienced those problems, which is usually pretty low."

Honest Mommy replied: "Um I'm sorry she had a bad reaction but just because your child had some side effects does not mean it's a bad medication for allergies. There are risks for taking any medicine, even Tylenol. Everything has possible side effects. Try asking her doctor to prescribe another allergy medicine. I can't take Zythromax (an antibiotic) because it upsets my stomach and I have severe diarrhea. That's just the way my body handles it so I also make it a point to tell my doctor who treats me that Zythromax does not set well with me. But it does great for other people, so should I tell all these other people not to take it based on a side effect I had? No. If this is the attitude you have on one medicine, maybe you should just ban all medicine from your house.....but that would be insane especially if your child was in pain."

southern_belle1973 replied: "Im sorry your daughter had such a bad reaction to a medication, but all medications carry the risk of side effects. My son cant take antibiotics, I cant have any topical numbing agents or my throat closes up. Did you also look up the side effects to the antibiotics? Point being all meds have side effects, prescrip or otc."

momof4 replied: "Sorry your child had a bad reaction. Check out the warnings on virtually any medication, though, and you'll find similar lists. The idea is that the "common side effects" are either quite uncommon or mild enough to be worth the good the medication does. My daughter was at the emergency room on a regular basis for severe asthma and had pneumonia twice before she started Singulair. On Singulair and one other medication, she's a different -- way healthier -- kid. She does have a side effect ... it's harder for her to fall asleep (which falls under insomnia)). But I'd easily rather have it take her an extra half hour to fall asleep than to worry about her being rushed to the ER a couple times a month to be put on oxygen. It's always worth knowing what potential side effects are so you can be on the lookout for them. Sorry they happened to your daughter. But it doesn't mean that no one should take singulair, or even that it's any more dangerous than any other medication. My daughter's actually allergic to penicillin ... which can potentially even be fatal. that doesn't mean that penicillin's not right for my other kids. These are issues people have to take up with their doctors about what is the right medication for their own individual child."

pinkpiglet126 replied: "Every medicine that is made has side effects. My son has been taking singular for about 4 years now and it's a miracle drug as far as I'm concerned. It's the only asthma med that has controlled his asthma. Ever. If you don't give your child a medicine because of potential side effects, you'll never give your child medicine. That's why when you give medicine to a child you observe them and if they have a reaction you talk to your doctor immediately and stop the med if you can."

Spartan 117 replied: "Its weird how medicines have more side affects than cures. Side effect: Anal Leakage. Yeah thanks now you moved my leak from my nose to my anus."

tamcoshoe replied: "My children have been on singulair for 2 years and had no problems it has helped them dramatically and doctors dont give scripts to hurt patients but to help them and on side effects the drug company has to list all complaints that any has had even if one person out of a million experienced vomiting they have to list it as a possible side effect and another thing you have to remember many things online are here say and not published by qualified people and even tylenol or aspirin can have negative effects anything can hurt or endanger somebody its just if your the one in however many"

rachel replied: "I am very thankful my daughter has had no such side effects. She has been on it for almost two years for asthma and has not touched a steroid, preventer, or ventolin since"

Pauly replied: "Singulair is basicly for people with asthma problems. I been on it for 10 years now and never had a problem. Talk with your doctor if you have any problems."

Isn't there a more natural remedy for allergies to grasses? My pulmonologist just prescribed Xyzal and singulair. I read the side effects and know there is no way I can take these medications. I drive for a living which is not recommended while on these meds. Also, there is other side effects that cause the same symptoms I went in to see the doc for. Help me please to find a healthier and more natural remedy for my allergies. Thank you so much.

theosharatos replied: "I buy my natural remedy online and save a ton of money for our allergies."

lumesire replied: "You don't know that you'll experience the side effects. Give them a fair try. Natural cures for allergies is hard. Local honey can help, since it contains antibodies produced by the pollens causing the trouble."

Zambiti replied: "Local honey helps. Boost your immune system by adding some Vit C, Vit A, Garlic and apple cider vinegar to your day. The best bet to avoid the drugs would be to find a good homeopath and get a complete appraisal and recommendations. We've had very good luck with homeopathy. We use a homeopath who is 1000 miles away too!! (by phone and internet) So, you don't have to just look in your local area for a highly recommended one. I always get a kick out of the medicines that list as side effects exactly what you are trying to get rid of. How do you know if it is your symptoms or the side effects. psssshhhhhh"

rickyoutfield replied: "Anything to enhance your immune system. For relief I used to take alfalfa and panothenic acid (B5), but now my immune system is stronger."
